Training

To operate as a radio amateur in the UK, you must pass an exam and hold a valid licence issued by Ofcom. There are several ways to study for these exams, depending on how you prefer to learn and how much support you want.

Below are two popular and trusted training providers used by many UK radio amateurs.

Essex Ham

Pros:
  • Very well structured and easy to follow
  • Good for complete beginners
  • Clear learning path through the foundation licence level
  • Can be done entirely from home
Cons:
  • Less face-to-face interaction
  • Requires self-motivation and discipline
  • Not focused on portable or outdoor operating specifically

Bath Based Distance Learning (BBDL)

Bath Based Distance Learning offers long-running and well-respected amateur radio training using an online learning system, often combined with tutor support.

Pros:
  • Established and respected training provider
  • Good depth of technical material
  • Well suited to Intermediate and Full licence study
Cons:
  • More technical than some beginners expect
  • Less tailored to casual learners
  • Focus is on passing the exam rather than operating style

SPARC Training Policy

The Staffordshire Portable Amateur Radio Club (SPARC) does not provide formal licence training courses or run structured exam preparation classes.

However, SPARC members are more than happy to:

  • Explain radio concepts in plain language
  • Help you understand topics you are studying
  • Give practical demonstrations of equipment and antennas
  • Offer advice on portable and outdoor operating
  • Support you during real operating sessions

If you are studying for a licence and would like practical experience or friendly advice, you are always welcome to join us on a portable operating day.
